What an exciting day! I had the privilege to be the one to check out the campgrounds before our upcoming retreat.
The Willow Creek Rd campground is very dark, which is also very close to where the Russian River crosses Hwy 1. This campground is inside the woods. That said, there is a gorgeous stream running from the top of the mountain down the creek (Willow Creek) which is worth a visit.
From the campground I went north to the area of Bodega Bay and the Russian River, which was also very nice. You can find images from the campsites there in the "Around the Russian River" Album I uploaded few days ago. In general, this northern area is cooler than the south, so our choice speaks for itself. The scenery is breathtaking and very powerful, especially the Russian River and the giant redwoods. The Bodega Dunes campground was very windy, therefore I was glad to be out of it.
They say that the trail which goes from the campground to the ocean is one of the most beautiful hikes in the state! It goes through the woods and then climbs the mountain and goes up and down the hills until it hits the ocean, which is a great place to finish a hike, and I share this from experience.
The campground in Arroyo Seco, (which means the dry creek, even though it is not that dry,) has all the facilities and is way more organized the the ones in the north. I rally liked the combination of the scenery, the facilities, the clear water and the weather.
So, eventually we chose to do the next retreat in the Southern Arroyo Seco campground. Though, I am very happy I had the chance to visit the other sites in the north.
The video is from my scouting tour of Arroyo Seco
