My favorites pictures from 2010

As you probably know, I love taking pictures. Where ever I go, what ever I do, my 10px Cannon camera is always with me.

I was lucky enough this year to do some traveling in the US and outside, see gorgeous landscapes, people, animals and loads of plants, as well as urban areas and many man made phenomena.

It was very difficult to choose the "best" ones from this year, and after eliminating thousands, I remained with 500 that I am using as my screen saver slideshow. From these 500 pictures, I had even harder time to choose only 50!

Pine trees in Israel - What's the connection?

Following the biggest fire in Israel's history on the Carmel mountain, I went ahead and researched the subject I found most disturbing -  the pine trees plantations and its origins.

Wild fires in the Carmel mountain

Today's fire throughout the Carmel mountain is one of the biggest and deadliest that this mountain, and th state of Israel, experienced in the last few decades. 40 cadets from the jailor course, who came with a bus to help evacuating a prison, were burned alive inside the bus. The flames hit the bus in approximately 100 KPH (about 62MPH) speed and literally consumed the bus in moments.

Road Trip to the South West

2,800 miles (4,500 km), 38 hours of driving and 5 days of serenity in a road trip to the South West of Northern America. That was my last week's awesomely awesome trip to the Wild (very wild) West. I had the pleasure to spend this time with a great young family who came to visit the wonders of the South Western part of the US.

Weird mushrooms in my raised beds

This week, while doing my daily walk around the raised beds, I noticed that 1 of the beds is populated with new mushrooms!

I never had any mushrooms growing in my garden and I think that it is due to the soil I brought in not long ago is the case here, but I am not really sure yet...

These mushrooms popup during the night (so I believe) and are in full size during the day. They do not last more than 1 day and dries out from the sun in a way that almost nothing is left from it.

Interview with Aliison Kerr about my roof-top garden

I had the pleasure to be interviewed by Alison Kerr, which is an AltGlobe blogger and an avid gardener.
I have been following Alison for a while and learned few good things from her gardening experiences and tips.
The full interview can be found on her blog.

13th One Celebration in Oakland

First I want to thank everybody who came and made it such a great night! I also want to thank Laurence for organizing the Garden Work Party on our roof, few hours before the One celebration, which was very helpful. I am especially thanking Carol Rhodes for the good advices about how to grow my plants and other advices about the garden in general.

Greenhouses are working!

It cannot be easier than that!

Our household now is in the loop of having enough green leaves to feed itself. We even have some surplus, which we share with our neighbors, who take care of the garden when we are not here.

Apparently greens like Aurugula and different types of lettuce really like hot and humid environment. Now, after experimenting for few months, I can say that this greenhouse endeavor worked very well for our bellies ;-)

Dispersing the darkness - Bring the light ON!

Every year at this time I am really overwhelmed by the cultural richness here in the Bay Area. Within this richness I see a common thread of behavior derived from our unbreakable relation to the nature. But, how amazing it is to see (after delving just a bit into our history) that our own truth has a sister, brother and actually, entire families and peoples.
We are all (whether aware of it or not) celebrating the light in the darkness and we all have specific customs how to disperse this lack of colors (and warmth), called darkness.

Spring garden is ON!

There is nothing more refreshing for me than being outdoors in the spring. What can be better than having a picnic in a green field of joy and flowers? (omit the bugs for this scene)

This spring I decided to take our roof garden one step forward, as far as how it is organized. So, the first thing I did was to design how I want my garden to be built in the most efficient way. I had to take into consideration the angle of the sun in the sky, the wind direction, draining path for the water and of course the right plants for this season.
